Longspring Stud was established in 1982 with the importation of the licensed Hanoverian stallion DISTELFINK who went on to produce many of NZ's top showjumpers and eventers. He was the leading sire for showjumpers for more than 14 years in a row and was 3rd on the International FEI World Breeding Championship for Sport Horses in Eventing.

Rupert & Anne Vallance bred and started under saddle such top class horses as Super Moth who with John Cottle won more than 75 showjumping competitions including 44 at Grand Prix Level; Duty Free with Maurice Beatson a top class horse that won many World Cup rounds including 1 in Australia; and Falcon with Catriona Williams (nee McLeod) who also won World Cup rounds and was the Show Hunter of the Year. You can read more about Distelfink under the Past Sires and more about the stud's top offspring in Our Horses

The stud stands 4 sport horse sires that represent the best of the Distelfink bloodlines including Tiger Moth LS who is out of a full sister to Super Moth

Also at the stud, but not for general service is WATCHMAN, a top racehorse with 10 wins in Australia including 2 stakes races and over $163,000 (AUD) in winnings. He traces directly back to the dam of Furioso xx with similar bloodlines and from what we read a similar type and attitude. Furioso was a dominant influence in refining the European warmblood breeds.

The stud also stands the 23 year old HULA TOWN, one of the first sons of Sir Tristram to stand at stud and a good sire in his own right. Hula Town is better known for producing international class eventers and in his retirement will be used for the sport horse side of the business.
