About Us

At Longspring, we have a proud tradition of producing top quality horses for the equestrian and now racing industries.

The stud was officially set up in 1982 by Rupert and Anne Vallance with the importation of a fully licensed Hanoverian stallion from West Germany. Distelfink was the first jumping specialised stallion to be imported. In the years that followed until his death in 2004 at the age of 26, Distelfink was to prove to be a leading sire of competition horses in all disciplines - but more specifically showjumping.

Times have changed in the 25+ years since the stud was first setup. A new generation in Victoria Vallance and her partner Brett Martin have launched the stud operation into a sophisticated equine centre specialising in the modern technology of transported semen, embryo transfers and freezing semen for the sport horse industry.  The frozen equine semen technology opens the world's best bloodlines to breeders here in New Zealand.

As one generation moves to the future, Rupert and Anne have taken on a new direction as a small but specialised thoroughbred breeding operation with the acquistion of Colombia to stand at stud here. They will be acquiring a small band of TB mares specifically to produce racehorses looking for winning performance as the bottom line - but with a special eye on the staying type of racehorse.

Join with us as we move in new directions and celebrate the many successes of our friends and fellow breeders in both the equestrian and racing industries.
