Longspring Stud has been breeding quality sport horses since 1983 with our first crop of foals by Distelfink. Distelfink, a licensed Hanoverian stallion was used in a selective breeding program over thoroughbred mares to produce a NZ type of sport horse. Quality horses reared naturally on our 450 acre hill country farm in the Wairarapa that have gone on to be winners in all disciplines here in NZ and overseas.
Today, the stud is producing 15 to 20 quality young horses each year from our selection of proven bloodlines from our own stock and using frozen semen from overseas. We select all mares on known performance or loosejumping ability. Distelfink was named the leading sire of broodmares of showjumpers at the 2010 NZ Young Horse Showjumping Championships showing the value of his pedigree long term.
Our stud has the best collection of sport horse bloodlines procuded in NZ. Each youngster is prepared professionally to be a balanced, responsive and good natured horse. The horses are all forward going and retain the athleticism of the thoroughbred but with the power and jumping ability enhanced by the warmblood. Horses are started carefully under saddle by Rupert who is a 5th generation horseman and who started off all our top horses including Super Moth, Denver, Falcon, and Duty Free.
We are breeding specifically for the jumping, showhunter and eventing market and have a range of types from almost full thoroughbred to ¾ warmblood. If you do not see a horse on these pages that would suit your purpose, please don’t hesitate to get in touch as we have many quality youngsters coming on – one of them is bound to suit!
Horses in Competition
We have been off the radar for a few years but starting in 2009/10, the Longspring Team is heading back out on the road. Starting in 2010/11 season we expect to be competing a team of up to 6 young horses ranging in age from 4 to 6. Most of these will be for sale.
Young Horses in work
We have a number of young 4 and 5 year old horses that have been in work on the stud and are ready for sale. Later in the season you may see them out with the Longspring Team but if you want an early bargain, check out these young horses.
